Waves of asylum-seeking refugees at the southern border are dominating national headlines and igniting contentious debates on how to address the crisis. But why and what are they fleeing? Award-winning author Marie Arana examines critical driving forces that have shaped Latin America for the past millennium—including exploitation, violence, and religion—and continue to reverberate to the present day.

Marie Arana is the literary director of the Library of Congress, director of the National Book Festival, and the author of Silver, Sword, and Stone: Three Crucibles in the Latin American Story. David M. Rubenstein (moderator), co-founder and co-executive chairman of the Carlyle Group, is the author of The American Story: Conversations with Master Historians.
