Description:
Pair of khaki-colored cotton canvas field service trousers with 1" yellow wool felt stripe down the side of each leg; 4 button fly, 6 buttons around the waistband, a pocket at the front of each hip with flaps that button closed, legs reinforced from the pockets to below the knees; 2 straps at the small of the back which fasten at the center to metal buckle with double-tongued chape, 2 rear pockets with flaps that button closed, seat reinforced.

These trousers are part of a uniform worn by Capt. Kurtz Eppley when he served in the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry (Roosevelt's Rough Riders), in the Spanish-American War. This uniform is an example of the Army's first khaki "issue," as well as the first instance when a uniform was referred to as "field service."
