Description:
Brown wool double-breasted evening coat with a fitted body and long, slender, ankle-length skirt, split from base to waist up the back; split tab, pointed collar with brown velvet trim falls into narrow lapel; two rows of five horn buttons up the front; flap pocket on the breast and two flap pockets at the waist; tab and horn button closure at the knees; lined with brown silk and brown, red and orange plaid wool.

According to the donor, this evening coat was worn by Chancellor Robert R. Livingston while he was ambassador to France, 1801-1804.
