Description:
Twelve silver teaspoons with pointed oval bowl, pointed oval handle with bright-cut and wheel-turned decoration, and slightly raised pointed arch drop; engraved intials inside almond-shaped frame on obverse of handle; stamped maker's mark on reverse.
Gallery Label:
William Garret Forbes was one of New York's most prolific silversmiths of the period, and many spoons with similar Federal-style bright-cut engraved ornament are associated with him, his shop, or the silversmiths from whom he contracted work. Forbes was at the center of a silversmithing dynasty that included his brother, Abraham Gerritze, and sons Colin Van Gelder, John Wolfe, and Garret Forbes. Forbes also formed important relationships with the New Jersey silversmiths Joseph and Teunis DuBois, whose pseudohallmarks are also struck on each spoon. The foliate "JB" adorning each handle end closely resembles the initials engraved on the Beekman family hot water urn and tray (1911.62a-e), and indicates that the spoon set was likely part of a larger tea table ensemble owned by the family.
