Description:
Oak Regency style table; rectangular top on turned and shaped colonettes terminating in scroll feet joined by a ball-turned stretcher; brass plaque with inscription set in center of top.
Gallery Label:
This table was made from timbers from the H.M.S. "Shannon," which defeated the U.S.S. "Chesapeake" in 1813. Captain James Lawrence (1781-1813) was made commander of the U.S. frigate "Chesapeake" in early 1813. He set out on June 1, 1813, to engage H.M.S. "Shannon," then blockading Boston. After a brief confrontation, the "Shannon" emerged victorious and Lawrence was mortally wounded. The table was made after the ship was broken up in 1860.
