Description:
Dress sword with straight, evenly tapered triangular blade with etched designs and blue enamel and gilding covering the upper 12 inches on all three sides; gilded brass hilt with grips faced with reeded mother of pearl plaques and lined on either side with a gilded brass strip with embossed rosettes; asymmetrical counter-guard on obverse with scroll detail in open circle on one side and shield-breasted eagle molded in relief on front; ornately molded knuckle-bow with circular floral panels at bottom, top and center; eagle's head pommel; black leather scabbard badly deteriorated and missing mounts; black leather waist belt with holster (frog) pierced for frog stud and circular gilded brass buckle with initials "NY" in applied metal (silver?) at center.

According to the accession records, this dress sword was worn by Dr. William H. Jackson (1810-1893), father of the donor. Jackson was commissioned surgeon of the 252nd Regiment of Infantry, New York, on May 23, 1840. His address is listed as 525 Broadway in the New York City directory from 1842 to 1846. This address and "Dr. Jackson" are handwritten in ink on the inside of the belt. His dress coat and other pieces of his military uniform are in the N-YHS collection.
