Nast was to recycle his Santa Claus portraits many times. This book, printed in full color by James McLoughlin in New York in 1870, uses small images that first appeared as vignettes in the 1866 Harper's holiday cartoon to illustrate an original poem by George Webster. Although not as well known as "A Visit from St. Nicholas," Webster's poem contains some memorable lines calculated to warm the hearts of adults as well as children, including this description of the rotund Santa: "He is large round the waist, but what care we for that/ 'Tis the goodnatured people who always get fat."
