A native of Charlestown, Mass., Osgood graduated from Harvard and went on to study theology at the Cambridge Divinity School. After holding serveral Unitarian pastorates, he succeeded the Rev. Orville Dewey as minister of the Church of the Messiah in New York in 1849, a position he held for the next twenty years. Osgood was long associated with The New-York Historical Society.
