Description: 
Wrought iron rush holder hinged with curling tongs and twisted stems, one anchored in the faceted wooden block base, the other bent round to the candle socket.

A rushlight consisted of rush stripped of its outer skin and dried, then saturated in hot grease or fat and burned for light. The wooden part was added in the 20th century.
