Bronze struck medal with obverse showing nude bust of Robert Patterson facing left; legend: "ROBERT M. PATTERSON DIRECTOR OF THE U.S. MINT/1835 - 51." Reverse depicts snake biting its own tail intertwined within a wreath enclosing inscription: "A PARTING TOKEN/OF REGARD/FROM THE OFFICERS/AND CLERKS/OF THE MINT./1851."; on scroll above: "CODEX/MONETAE/1837."
