Description:
Embroidered picture in red, white, blue and black silk floss on painted satin; image of the protected cruiser U.S.S. New Orleans flying U.S. flag in center with inscription beneath in painted ocean setting; stitches include satin, straight, knots.
Gallery Label:
The U.S.S. New Orleans was purchased by the U.S. Navy March 16, 1898. The protected cruiser sailed May 17 for service in the Spanish-American War, joining the Flying Squadron off Santiago de Cuba. Through the summer New Orleans cruised on blockade between San Juan, Puerto Rico and Guantanomo Bay, Cuba, capturing a French blockade runner. She arrived in Philadelphia October 20th for the Peace Jubilee, then prepared to New York to launch peacetime service.
