Sarah Ellen Derby was the daughter of John Derby and the granddaughter of Elias Hasket Derby, merchants of Salem. She was married to John Rogers, a Boston merchant, and was the mother of John Rogers, the genre sculptor. This portrait bust was a gift to the Society from her granddaughter.
