This milestone, from the series of 1822-23, was originally located on the west side of the Bowery, opposite Rivington Street. Marble cutter Francis Kain (ca. 1786-1844), who had a marble yard at 359 Greenwich Street, supplied and cut the stones for this series. This milestone remained in place until the spring of 1926, when it was struck and broken by a coal wagon drawn by a runaway horse.
