Mordkin, a native of Moscow, Russia, was a celebrated ballet dancer and the partner of Anna Pavlova. He first came to the United States in the 1909-10 season when he and Pavlova introduced the Russian ballet to American audiences. After the revolution in 1917 he was placed in charge of the Soviet Opera House, but in 1924 he fled to find asylum in the United States. He settled in New York and organized his own ballet troupe which was later called the Ballet Theatre of New York.
