White metal struck medal with obverse bearing clothed bust of Andrew Johnson with surrounding legend: "ANDREW JOHNSON/17th PRESIDENT OF THE U.S." Reverse contains ornate shield bearing seal of New York, at center, with legend: "PUBLIC RECEPTION AND BANQUET/BY THE MUNICIPAL AUTHORITIES/AUG. 29. 1866"; inscription: "OF/NEW YORK CITY."
