Description:
Copper struck medal with obverse showing three-masted ship on waves, lifeboat with four men between ship and beach in foreground; on l. of beach, small house marked RELIEF; to r. of house, two men firing a mortar, shooting a lifeline toward the ship; legend: "LIFE SAVING BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK"; in exerg.: "INCD 29TH MARCH,/1849." Reverse shows laurel wreath and legend framing space for inscription; legend: "VITA FELICIBUS AUSIS SERVATA".
