The subject, a famous cartoonist and founder and editor of "Puck," was born in Vienna and came to the U.S. in 1867. For a while in the 1870s Keppler drew caricatures for "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper." He became famous for his lithographic cartoons of political and social figures, which were the epitome of satirical humor in America at that time.
