Description:
Copper struck medal with obverse showing clothed bust of James Blaine facing left with legend: "JAMES G BLAINE." Reverse depicts eagle superimposed on shield and two flags, with surrounding legend: "REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE/FOR PRESIDENT."
Gallery Label:
James G. Blaine (1830-1893) was one of the most influential as well as notorious Republicans of the late 19th century. He served 13 years in Congress, and was a candidate for the Republican nomination for President in 1876 and 1879. A leader of the "half-breed" Republicans opposing corrupt patronage practices, he finally received the presidential nomination in 1884, but lost the election to Grover Cleveland.
