Description:
Dark olive green felt hat with roughly cylindrical crown with depression around edges of top, and wide brim with edges bound with black cloth tape; front insignia with "US" between branches of laurel embroidered on black cloth ground; gold hat cord with slide and acorn tips; brown leather sweatband.
Gallery Label:
According to the accession records, this hat was worn during the Civil War by John Frederick Pierson. Pierson was a captain in the 1st New York Infantry at the beginning of the war; by the time he was mustered out, on May 25, 1865, he had attained the rank of brigadier-general.
