Description:
Navy blue wool glengarry (flat folding garrison-style cap) with a diced border; small red, white, and blue checkered band around the bottom; narrow black silk ribbon finishes bottom edge; small blue pompom at center top of hat; two black silk ribbons attached to back of hat and crossed to form hanging ribbons. A regimental device composed of a bird's wing, silk rosette, and a metal highland thistle attached to proper left front of hat; below rosette are four metal pins that write: "79 / N.Y." Hat lined with black silk; seven-point star hand-stitched to center of lining.

This glengarry was worn as part of the parade uniform of a member of the 79th New York Regiment (New York Highlanders) New York Volunteers during the Civil War.
