Giovanni da Verrazzano (?)
Glazed and unglazed ceramic
Overall: 24 x 18 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. ( 61 x 47.6 x 24.8 cm )
The subject is thought to be the Italian navigator who on his famous voyages of 1524-28 was the first European to observe, explore, and describe the coast of North America. No life portraits of the subject are extant or documented. Though unsigned, the bust resembles work produced by Minghetti, a majolica factory in Bologna, Italy, active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
