MacDonald maintained his studio in New York and specialized in sculpted portrait busts. His portrait of Washington was based on a bust of Jean Antoine Houdon and a painting by Gilbert Stuart, probably the two most popular images of the first president. MacDonald is known to have owned a copy of the cast that Clark Mills made of the original 1785 bust by Houdon (now at Mount Vernon).
