In his book on the sculptor, Robert Gale lists three marble versions of Crawford's bust of Washington: one is owned by the New York Public Library, another by Dr. Ernest Harms of New York City, and the third by The New-York Historical Society. The original seems to have been executed ca. 1850, using as a model the Houdon bust which was taken from life. Crawford was one of many sculptors who made their own portraits of Washington based on Houdon's image. Thomas Crawford probably modeled this bust after one made by Jean Antoine Houdon (1741-1828), which was based off of Washington's life mask. Like Houdon, Crawford depicted Washington draped in the toga of a Roman statesman.
