The subject of this portrait was born in New York, the son of Frederic and Helen Livingston (Hake) De Peyster. He was a trustee of the New York Society Library, a founder of the Soldier's Home, a vice-president of th Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and a member of the boards of several charitable organizations. From 1829 to 1837 he was recording secretary of The New-York Historical Society, from 1850 to 1863, a vice-president, and president in 1864-66 and 1873-82.
