Dr. Hawks possessed a magnificent library of some two thousand volumes related to American secular and ecclesiastical history. At the time of his death the collection was purchased by William Niblo, owner of the famous theater, Niblo's Garden. A year later Niblo presented this extraordinary library to The New-York Historical Society, of which he had long been a member.
