Description:
Pale amethyst non-lead glass figured flask blown in a two-part mold (McKearin GI-71) with hand-tooled flared lip, oval body with bust of Zachary Taylor and inscription "ROUGH AND READY" on obverse, bust of Samuel Ringgold on reverse and inscription "MAJOR RINGGOLD", and pontil mark on base.
Gallery Label:
Major Samuel Ringgold (1800-1846) was the first American officer to be fatally wounded in the Mexican War. This flask commemorates General Zachary Taylor's victory over the Mexican forces in the battle of Palo Alto on May 8, 1846, as well as the heroism of Ringgold, a native of Washington County, Maryland. This flask was purchased from the estate of George S. McKearin.
