Description:
Brass door knocker; u-shaped acanthus leaf and fluted handle; beaded acanthus leaf plate with pair of sphinxes and beaded and engraved medallion above name plate.
Gallery Label:
The knocker came from the London home of Samuel Bayard (1767-1840), who was appointed by George Washington in 1794 to act as an agent for the U.S. in prosecuting U.S. claims before the British Admiralty courts following the ramification of Jay's Treaty. The donor's father (Samuel Bayard Dod) was the grandson of Samuel Bayard.
