The subject, a native of New York State, was the son of Nathaniel E. James. He began his career as a clerk in the offices of Phelps and Peck, dealers in copper, tin, and iron in New York. In time he became a partner of Phelps, Dodge and Co., and from 1831 he was in charge of that firm's branch, called Phelps, James and Co., in Liverpool, England, where he made his home. He died in Beaconsfield, near London.
