Description:
Naval cutlass with curved, single-edged steel blade with broad fuller; half-basket guard made of unperforated sheet brass riveted to cast brass knuckle-bow and counter-guard; wooden grip with carved ridges, originally covered in leather; helmet-shaped pommel without surface decoration; leather scabbard with riveted back seam and circular brass frog stud.

According to the accession records, this cutlass was worn by the donor's father, Lieutenant John R. Myrick, who served in the 3rd Artillery, Battery E, at Folly Island, South Carolina, in 1864. Lieutenant Myrick was slightly wounded at Olustee (Ocean Pond), Florida, on February 20, 1864.
