Description:
Sword (cutlass) with curved, single-edged iron blade and iron hilt; cupped oval counter-guard with short quillon with cylindrical finial; knuckle-bow now broken and missing; cast iron grip with corrugations.

According to the accession records, this sword was found ca. 1957 by the donor within the wooden ribs of a colonial vessel in the mud of a construction site on Pearl Street, in New York City. In a contemporaneous article appearing in The New York Times, the vessel was identified as a "Dutch barge" of the 1650s.
