Description:
Cup with overall ogee shape, decorated with a large reserve with a different exotic bird framed with raised-paste gold floral wreath; the gold rim at the top of the cup is plain on the outside and scalloped on the inside edge; saucer shares the double ogee shape of cup; the blue ground of each is enclosed by plain gold bands and holds two reserves with different exotic birds framed with raised-paste gold floral wreaths of flowers and leaves.
Gallery Label:
Samuel Ward, a native of Rhode Island, fought in the Revolution as Captain of the Rhode Island Army of Observation. He retired from the Army as a Colonel. After the war, he became a merchant and lived in New York City and Jamaica, Long Island. He traveled to Canton, China and was in Paris at the time of the French Revolution and is said to have brought the china to America on his return. He retired from business in 1816 and lived thereafter at his farm in Jamaica until his death in 1832.
