Bronze struck medal with obverse showing nude bust of Cornelius Vanderbilt facing right; legend around border contining six stars: "A GRATEFUL COUNTRY TO HIS GENEROUS SON/CORNELIUS VANDERBILT." Reverse depicts allegorical scene with standing figure of America facing kneeling Neptune in the guise of a woman; steamship in background; inscription in exergue: "BIS DAT QUI TEMPORI DAT./1865 [at center]."
