Commodore Vanderbilt, founder of the Vanderbilt fortunes, was born at Port Richmond, Staten Island, the son of Cornelius and Phebe (Hand) Vanderbilt. A tycoon in finance, railroads, steamships, and other areas of business, he rose to be one of the wealthiest Americans of the 19th century.
