Description:
Flat-folding black beaver chapeau bras with fan somewhat taller than the cock; two wide bands of black ribbon extend diagonally from base of cock (front), with cockade between them in the form of a rosette crossed by three gold bullion loops secured by a gilded metal button embossed with eagle insignia.
Gallery Label:
The accession records suggest that this chapeau might have belonged to Stephen Keyes Stanton (1826-1914), Secretary of the U.S. Legation to Paris under Richard Rush (1780-1859), U.S. Minister to France from 1847 to 1849. The donor was Stanton's daughter-in-law.
