Description:
Polychrome jaquard-woven silk ribbon (bookmark) depicting portrait of George Washington within oval medallion, surmounted by eagle with American flag; portrait within elaborate blue and pink surround inscribed at top: "THESE UNITED COLONIES ARE,/AND OF RIGHT OUGHT TO BE,/FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES."; names of states are vertically inscribed on stripes beneath portrait, ending with gold stars, from left to right: "NEW HAMPSHIRE/RHODE ISLAND/MASSACHUSETTS/NEW YORK/CONNECTICUT/NEW JERSEY/PENNSYLVANIA/VIRGINIA/DELAWARE/N CAROLINA/S CAROLINA/MARYLAND/GEORGIA"; beneath is stylized scroll with date at either end: "1776/1876" and inscription: "IN COMMEMORATION OF/THE CENTENNIAL OF/AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE"; above lower end, folded to straight point, is stars and stripes shield encircled by laurel and oak wreath; scroll with inscription above: "E PLURIBUS UNUM".
