Bronze struck medal with obverse showing central image of man and woman on a raft watching help coming from a distance, surrounded by thirty-nine stars; date in exergue: "JULY 26 1866." Reverse depicts allegorical figure of America, seated, with eagle at her side and the Capitol building in background, placing laurel wreath upon head of sailor kneeling before her; surrounding legend: "BY JOINT RESOLUTION OF CONGRESS TO THE RESCUERS OF THE PASSENGERS OFFICERS AND MEN OF STEAM SHIP SAN FRANCISCO WRECKED DEC. 1853/TESTIMONIAL OF NATIONAL GRATITUTE FOR HIS GALLANT CONDUCT."
