Description:
Bronze struck medal, with obverse showing uniformed bust of John P. Jones facing right with legend: "JOANNI PAVLO JONES CLASSIS PREAFECTO/COMITIA AMERICANA." Reverse shows naval battle scene with legend: "HOSTIVUM NAVIBVS CAPTIS AVT FVGATIS" and inscription below exergual line: "AD ORAM SCOTIAM XXIII SEPT./MDCCLXXVIIII."

The first order of American-struck bronze medals for John Paul Jones came on June 7, 1863, when Director of U.S. Mint Pollock requested twenty-five to be made. When the first dies were made in 1863, the artist's name (Dupre) was left off, as on this example.
