In 1970 the United Farm Workers (UFW) union, organized by Cesar Chavez, called for a nation wide boycott of non-union lettuce. The boycott was intended to support the right of lettuce pickers in California to form their own union and bargin for better conditions and pay. In the years between 1966 and 1973 the UFW organized boycotts of three commodities; table grapes, wine grapes and lettuce. The lettuce boycott was largely unsuccessful because of the nature of the industry and commodity, the.
