Description:
White cotton World War I Red Cross brassard, with red felt cross at the center, strap tab at one side, metal buckle with center chape and 2 tongues at opposite end.
Gallery Label:
This nurse's brassard was worn by Adelaide Milton de Groot (1876-1967), in France during World War I. Born in New York City, she spent her youth in Nice, France, and lived the first 40 years of her life abroad. She studied art in Paris, and around 1920 began to collect the works of 19th and 20th century painters. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Huguenot Society. She gave a sizable collection of portraits of her family to the Society in the 1940s.
