Dark brown leather billfold; inside, spine lined with light brown leather, compartment on each side lined with white linen, each compartment divided by leather partition.
Gallery Label:
This billfold was among the items found in the footlocker of William H. Paine, who served as a surveyor with the Army engineers during the Civil War. Paine was responsible for devising systems and tools to better facilitate the surveyor's tasks, including patenting a coiled steel tape measure.
