Wedgwood profile medallions of Franklin, first produced in 1768 and widely circulated thereafter, were an important means of promoting Franklin's reputation in England during the critical years leading up to the American Revolution. In 1772 Franklin bragged to his son about his popularity among English intellectuals: "…my company so much desired that I seldom dine at home in winter, and could spend the whole summer in the country houses of inviting friends, if I chose it."
