Description:
Round navy blue wool hat with large red wool ball (pompom) centered at top; black silk band around base of hat; black silk grosgrain ribbon stitched to back, folded to create two hanging ribbons; hat interior lined with brown chintz cotton; inside center of hat has stamped crest composed of a lion, unicorn and a crown above a shield; printed below crest is "Granville" and above, "Warranted Indigo Dye"; three rows of hand stitching in shape of diamond surround the crest. Proper left front edge has a regimental device composed of a metal highland thistle centered on a black silk ribbon sewn to the hat.

This balmoral hat was part of the parade uniform worn by second lieutenant Alexander Campbell of the 79th New York Regiment (New York Highlanders) New York Volunteers during the Civil War. Campbell served as a private in 1861 and second lieutenant in 1862-63.
