French Legion of Honor, 1870, Republic Officer class, with white enamel cross, surrounded by laurel wreath; central medallion, obverse with a classical head in profile wearing a laurel wreath, reverse shows crossed tricolor flags.

The Legion of Honor was established by Napoleon Bonaparte when he was First Consul, in 1802, to reward military and civil service. It is France's highest order. "Officer" is one of its classes.
