The subject of this portrait was Gustav Mahler's assistant and protégé at the Imperial Opera House in Vienna, Austria, in the early 1900s; he came to the United States in 1915 to conduct the German repertoire at New York City's Metropolitan Opera Company. A bronze version of this bust is owned by the Metropolitan Opera Association.
